How are hackathons organized in Switzerland?
Although many small or midsize company-organized hackathons exist, the large, publicly accessible hackathons in Zurich and Switzerland are usually organized by universities, non-profits, or umbrella initiatives like digitalswitzerland. They are typically held over a weekend (48 hours), but some take place across a whole week or feature hybrid participation formats.

Why would I join a hackathon in Switzerland?
Hackathons in Zurich and Switzerland are a vibrant and exciting part of the local tech scene. The country has a long history of research and development in science and technology and is home to several world-class universities and research institutes. Switzerland is also home to many international tech companies, including IBM, Google, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft, which have established research and development centers here. July

July kicks off with an exciting quantum computing focus at CERN's IdeaSquare, where participants will explore the intersection of quantum technologies and novel materials discovery during a three-day intensive hackathon. August

August offers diverse opportunities across Switzerland, starting with the prestigious JiVS Hackathon at the scenic Seeburg Castle in Kreuzlingen, featuring SAP-focused challenges with substantial prize pools exceeding CHF 10,000. The month continues with BÄRNHÄCKT in Bern, welcoming participants of all skill levels to collaborate on data, design, and software projects. History meets technology in Brig's unique AR/VR hackathon, where teams will create immersive experiences around Gamsen's medieval wall. August concludes with the exclusive Build Europe Hackathon in Zürich, bringing together top student hackers from across Europe for an elite invitational event.

September is dominated by the Swiss {ai} Weeks initiative, creating a nationwide celebration of artificial intelligence innovation. The month begins with RiskOn in Zurich, targeting professional development through data and software challenges, followed by the Energy Data Hackday at FHNW in Windisch, focusing on sustainable energy solutions. The Swiss {ai} Weeks then launches across multiple cities simultaneously, with specialized AI hackathons in Bern (Köniz), Lenzburg (fintech focus), Lausanne (EPFL collaboration), Zurich (Kraftwerk with 15+ challenges), and Geneva (CERN partnership for digital inclusion), creating an unprecedented month-long ecosystem of AI innovation spanning finance, healthcare, GovTech, and industry automation.
